Digging deep

Serve On volunteers fund-raising in Salisbury (with search dogs Teg and Storm) ahead of a big final assessment exercise in April for our Urbans Search And Rescue trainees

Serve On volunteers hit the not-so mean streets of Salisbury on a fund-raising mission this month and found the lovely people of the city in a generous mood.

The £600 in donations received will prove a valuable contribution to future life-saving efforts.

After nearly two years of training, ten of our International Response Team members are due to undergo their final assessment next month in a gruelling five-day exercise to find out if they are ready to be deployed alongside existing ‘operational’ urban search and rescue (USAR) volunteers in the event of an overseas disaster.

As well as giving up many hours of their time, our volunteers receive no government funding, have to buy their own personal kit and safety equipment and need to help pay the considerable cost of their final assessment exercise, including flights, so the fund-raising efforts are vital.

The people of Salisbury showed they were keen to learn more about the work of Serve On and our rescuers, not to mention meeting search dogs Teg and Storm.

Then, for our International Response Team volunteers, it was back to a weekend of life-saving training, including trauma management lessons, practising their response to road traffic accidents and honing their ability to operate out of a Base of Operations on deployment.

A big thank-you to everyone who showed an interest and/or dug into their pockets to donate to our charity.
