Join Serve On and make a difference

Serve On is a UK-based humanitarian charity providing specialist search and rescue, disaster response and community resilience support in the UK and internationally.

Our highly trained volunteers respond when communities face emergencies and disasters. Behind every successful operation is a dedicated team ensuring that our resources are managed responsibly and every donation makes a difference.

We are looking for two experienced finance volunteers to help strengthen our financial management, reporting and governance.

We welcome applications for either position individually, or from someone with the experience and availability to combine both roles.

Opportunity 1: Volunteer Finance Lead / Treasurer

Time commitment: Approximately 3–5 hours per month, with additional time around year-end.

We are looking for an experienced finance professional to provide financial leadership, oversight and advice to our Board of Trustees.

Key responsibilities:

  • Oversee financial management, budgets and cashflow forecasts.

  • Review monthly management accounts and present financial information to Trustees.

  • Ensure appropriate financial controls and accountability.

  • Oversee annual accounts preparation and statutory financial reporting.

  • Monitor restricted funds and financial compliance.

  • Support financial planning, sustainability and risk management.

  • Work closely with our volunteer bookkeeper and Board of Trustees.

About you:

You may be a qualified or experienced accountant, Finance Director, Finance Manager, charity treasurer or someone with substantial financial management experience.

Charity sector experience is desirable but not essential. We particularly welcome applications from retired or semi-retired finance professionals who would like to put their expertise to meaningful use.

This is a senior volunteer position working directly with the Board. Formal trustee appointment, if appropriate, would be discussed separately.

Opportunity 2: Volunteer Bookkeeper / Finance Administrator

Time commitment: Approximately 4–8 hours per month, with some additional flexibility at busy periods.

We are looking for a reliable, detail-oriented volunteer to manage our routine financial records and administration.

Key responsibilities:

  • Maintain accurate financial records using Xero.

  • Process invoices, expenses and transactions.

  • Reconcile bank accounts and payment platforms.

  • Maintain donation, membership and restricted fund records.

  • Assist with Gift Aid administration.

  • Prepare monthly financial information for review.

  • Maintain supporting financial records and documentation.

  • Prepare payment runs for independent authorisation.

About you:

You will have practical experience using Xero or another recognised accounting package, together with a good understanding of bookkeeping and financial record-keeping.

You may be an experienced bookkeeper, accounts assistant, accounting technician, freelance finance professional or someone with relevant experience looking to contribute to a worthwhile cause.

Previous charity experience is welcome but not essential. Familiarity with Xero is preferred, and onboarding support will be provided.

Why volunteer with Serve On?

  • Make a genuine contribution to humanitarian search and rescue operations.

  • Use your professional skills to support a worthwhile cause.

  • Work remotely with flexible hours around your existing commitments.

  • Join a dedicated and supportive team of volunteers.

  • Gain experience in charity governance and financial management.

  • Help ensure the charity remains financially sustainable and ready to respond when needed.

Both roles offer considerable flexibility, although occasional additional support may be needed during annual reporting periods or international emergency deployments.

Interested? Could do both roles? We'd love to hear from you.

Whether you are an experienced Finance Director looking to give something back, a professional bookkeeper with a few hours to spare, or someone who has previously supported a charity's finances, we would welcome a conversation.

To apply: Email finance@serveon.org.uk with a brief summary of your experience, the role that interests you and your likely availability.

Please use the subject line Volunteer Finance Opportunity.

Your financial expertise could help us make a difference when it matters most.
