I’m doing international search and rescue training to be useful when things go wrong. As a carpenter and ex-miner, I’m used to hard graft, tight spaces, and dealing with problems as they come. You learn to stay calm and get on with it, and I want to bring that into something that actually helps people when they’re in a bad place.
I want to push myself as well. Day-to-day work is one thing, but this is different, this is about being ready when someone’s having the worst day of their life. I don’t just want to learn it on paper, I want to be someone people can rely on when it matters.
I’ve always felt like I should be doing more than just looking after myself. Being part of a team that turns up and helps, even in a small way, means something to me. This feels like the right direction, learning proper skills, working with good people, and being ready to step in when it counts.
